Fiji born Rocky Khan is expected to be the All Blacks Sevens team playmaker after Tomasi Cama Junior was ruled out of the Hong Kong 7s.
Coach Gordon Tietjens named his 12-member team without the veteran Tomasi Cama but the IRB 7s player of the year will still be part of the team but as an assistant coach.
Other prominent players who will not make the trip to Happy Valley because of injury include Toby Arnold, Kurt Baker, Scott Curry, Mark Jackman and David Raikuna.
NZ is in pool B with USA, France and Kenya.
Meanwhile Gordon Tietjens will not leave with the team for Hong Kong this Sunday due to an ear infection but he is expected to join the side next Thursday.
Former All Blacks 7s player Damian Karauna will take over the coaching duties in Tietjens absence and will be assisted by Cama.
The Hong Kong 7s starts next Friday with Fiji taking on Hong Kong at 9.06pm.
