Calls made to improve meat industry
General Manager of the Intercontinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa Neil Houghton said since they started six months ago, 75% of their meat has been imported, and this is unavoidable because at the moment Fiji does not have the quality that they are looking for to serve their guests.
Houghton said if Fiji did have this, the money they are using to buy the imported meat could stay in the country.
Houghton also revealed that in the last six months 58% of their seafood products, as well as 68% of fruits and vegetables were imported, but this was due to time constraints as they were just starting up operations.
However, he revealed that steps are being taken to ensure the first quarter of 2010 will see all their produce being locally sourced.
Primary Industries Minister Joketani Cokanasiga earlier said they are currently working on improving beef production however it will take awhile for Fiji to service its own market.
The government has allocated $3 million in 2010 for agricultural projects aimed at reducing Fiji's growing reliance on imports.
