There will be a new captain to lead the Fiji Sevens team to the Gold Coast Sevens next month as former captain Setefano Cakau will be leaving for Sri Lanka.

Cakau said he will be away for two weeks to take care of some work and will miss out on the first leg.

Cakau added he spoke to head coach Alivereti Dere at the beginning of the Sevens camp of his intentions to return to Sri Lanka and he has agreed to release him.

The 34-year-old did not want to divulge any information as to why he has to return to Sri Lanka but he is hoping to be back in time for the second leg of the series in Dubai.

The Digicel Fiji Sevens team will be defending their title in Gold Coast and Cakau has wished them well.

Cakau will be accompanied by Digicel Fiji Sevens teammate Taniela Rawaqa.

A new captain is expected to be announced next week along with the 14 players for the Gold Coast Sevens on the 13th and 14th of next month.

Meanwhile, Tevita Waqairawai is the new national Sevens team manager.
