Cabinet approves compensation
The proposal was put forward to Cabinet by Labour Minister, Filipe Bole, who said that this step has now been taken as no compensation was given out to the families of the deceased and injured.
The disciplined force covers the Police, Military, Navy and Prison Officers, and Bole reveals that though the Compensation Act came into place in 1997, no monetary compensation has been done on all deaths and injury cases reported while military personnel were on duty during the period from 1978 to 31st January 1997 in Lebanon and from 1982 to 31st January 1997 in Sinai.
Though not mentioning how much it would cost Government in totality, Bole said the money will be given out on a case-by-case basis.
Fiji recorded 30 deaths and 120 serious injuries between 1978 - 1997 in Lebanon and in Sinai a total of 2 deaths and 65 serious injuries between 1982 - 1997.
