New provisions in the Copyright Amendment Decree 2009 will ensure that pirated products, especially CD's and DVD's, are identified and people are taken to task for selling these products.
Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said cabinet has approved the amendment decree and this new law will assist authorities in fighting piracy in Fiji.
Sayed-Khaiyum said Section 121 of the Copyright Act 1999 creates a number of offences relating to the making or selling, of infringing of copyright works.
However, he said prosecutions for offences under this section in relation to overseas copyrighted works have generally not succeeded, due to the difficulty of proving that the defendant had no licencing rights.
Sayed-Khaiyum said things will change now and it will assist in the clamping down of pirates.
Meanwhile the Managing Director of South Pacific Recordings, Ravindra Patel is happy that the authorities will finally crack down on video and audio pirates.
