Cabinet has endorsed the establishment of an interim council for the proposed Fiji National University to merge all public tertiary colleges.

Cabinet based its decision on a submission by the Interim Education Minister, Filipe Bole with all government owned tertiary institutions, which include the Fiji Institute of Technology (FIT), the Fiji School of Agriculture, the Fiji School of Nursing (FSN), the Fiji School of Medicine (FSM), Fiji College of Advanced Education and the Lautoka Teachers College.

Bole said it is now considered prudent in the long term for the six institutions to merge under a Vice Chancellor, whose office is set up separately, independent of the colleges with its own secretariat to oversee the running of the university.

He said because the University will be government owned and state funded, and studies offered will be broader than science and technology, it is preferred that the University be named the Fiji National University.
