CCF Welcomes IBA’s Visit
CCF Executive Director, Reverand Akuila Yabaki said the intended visit is to do an audit of the judicial process. Yabaki thinks that judges in the High Court, Supreme Court and Court of Appeal are always under scrutiny on their judgements and are supposed to be able to withstand scrutiny. Yabaki adds the IBA visit should not really have any impact on the quality or objectivity of their judgments.
Yabaki said they encourage IBA to visit civil society organizations including CCF and also to hear firsthand about the proposed Charter process.
Earlier this week, Interim Attorney General and Minister for Justice Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum said no to the visit because there are a number of matters before various tribunals and the courts.
There are reports that IBA will visit Fiji to examine the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary.
