The Citizens Constitutional Forum is concerned that the Interim Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has taken the Fiji Times to court after the paper published a letter to the editor which had criticized the High Court panel that ruled the President's actions to appoint an Interim Government was legal.
CCF Executive Director Reverend Akuila Yabaki said prosecuting the media and other persons for contempt stifles free speech in an oppressive manner.
He said although judges and courts are entitled to respect, they are also open to criticism.
The Interim Attorney General has been given until the 24th of November to file submissions on the type of penalty that should be imposed on The Fiji Times Editor in Chief Netani Rika and Publisher Rex Gardner.
