The Citizen's Constitutional Forum (CCF) has raised concern that non-civil servants have been appointed by the interim government as special administrators to replace elected mayors.

Chief Executive Reverend Akuila Yabaki said the action taken by the interim administration defies logic, especially since the new administrators have no special experience in improving functions of municipal councils. He adds a review or reorganization of the local municipal councils could have been adequately carried out with existing mayors in office.

Yabaki said municipal councils were the only elected institutions remaining in Fiji after the events of 2006 and local government institutions form part of the foundations of democracy, bringing democracy closer to people.

The interim Local Government Minister appointed Special Administrators for the different municipalities in Fiji to replace the Mayors and they will start work next Monday.
