The Suva City Council has today clarified that most of the supermarkets and shops operating in their vicinity have taken advantage of the extended shopping hours that came into effect at the end of last year.
Suva and Lami Special Administrator, Chandu Umaria said that supermarkets like MHCC and Tappoos are allowed to operate till 9pm while small shops operate till 11pm.
Umaria said licenses indicate how long a shop a allowed to operate but they do not encourage them to operate for 24 hours.
Umaria added that the security of the shops that open till late, is in the hands of the owners.
Meanwhile, Sigatoka Town Council CEO, Anand Sami Pillay said that the Town Council will meet with the Chamber of Commerce, the Coral Coast Tourist Association and Police tomorrow to discuss the issue.
The shops in Sigatoka are interested in the initiative to open for 24 hours however they are concerned about their security.
The Tourist Association will also liaise with the Town Council to see if festivals can be held in town to allow tourists into town and thus creating income for the shop owners.
