The President of the Suva Retailers Association has welcomed the call be government for the relaxing of opening hours under the Public Emergency Regulations.
Himmat Lodhia while reacting to the decision said many small businesses mainly in the semi-urban areas had suffered as a result of the reduced operating hours, coupled with paying an extra $20 weekly fee to various city Councils.
Lodhia said this will bring relief not only to business operators but the public as well.
Permanent Secretary for Information and Military Spokesperson Lt. Colonel Neumi Leweni said the PER which deals specifically with the opening hours for businesses will be relaxed based on the government's recognition of the contribution the business community makes to the nation's economic development.
However, Lt. Col Leweni stresses that businesses should operate strictly within their approved hours as stated in their licenses.
He adds that nightclub owners in particular will be closely monitored to ensure they abide by their approved operating hours.
The PER will remain in place till August 10th.
