The Fiji Bus Operators Association believes it’s extremely important that relevant stakeholders come together to discuss ways in which our bus stations can be made safer for the public.
Association, President Virendra Kewal said bus terminals that require buses to reverse to leave bus stations are a serious concern to the safety of pedestrians and this should be changed.
Kewal said the Suva City Council is being defensive over the safety of the Suva bus station and is irrational in blaming the design of the terminal on the fact that Fiji is a developing country.
SCC CEO Vijay Chand said they are ready to meet with the stakeholders on this issue.
Chand added for the time being to ensure the Suva bus station is much safer the council has started the construction of a walkway.
Chand said pedestrians will not be allowed to cross the bus station.
He said they will also be putting crossing humps and railings at the bus stations which may take one month.
Their comments come after the death of a 45-year-old mother and her three year old daughter in a bus accident at the Suva Bus stand last Tuesday.
