Bus drivers should give the right tickets for the required distance that a passenger travels and not try and make extra money by issuing different tickets for longer journeys.
This is the concern of Consumer Council of Fiji CEO, Premila Kumar at the Bus Ticketing Campaign that was launched this week.
Kumar said that some drivers have a tendency to do this and request the tickets again from the passengers who travel long distances, however this should not be the case.
LTA Chairman, Greg Lawlor said that it is their responsibility to see that bus drivers do not manipulate the system and increase the fares.
As of the 18th of this month, it will be compulsory for all bus drivers to give tickets to their passengers or face a fine or even jail time.
The penalty: a minimum of $50 or a maximum of $500 or a three month imprisonment applies to bus drivers and passengers alike and comes into effect from October 18 after necessary awareness is carried out throughout the nation.
