Bus fares will not decrease from Monday the 9th of February.
This is the directive given by the Interim Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama overturning Interim Works Minister, Timoci Natuva’s initial decision for a decrease, saying this is because the 21.9% subsidy has already been removed effective from January this year.
Bainimarama said the bus industry will be double penalized if both the removal of the subsidy and reduction in bus fares were to be effectively implemented.
Legal Representative for the Fiji Bus Operators Association, Viren Kapadia welcomes the new decision.
Kapadia had yesterday written to the Interim Transport Minister saying that the directive was an illegal one as certain procedures had not been followed.
The Interim Transport Minister had earlier issued a directive for bus fares to decrease from Monday the 9th of February in light of the fuel price decreases.
