Bus Fares Cannot Be Reduced
President Pyara Singh welcomes the Prices and Income Board's announcement and added there should be further reductions in fuel prices.
Fiji Taxi Union General Secretary Rishi Ram believes the taxi fare is still low compared to other costs which increased in the past few years.
The Land Transport Authority is asking the Fiji Bus Operators Association and the Fiji Taxi Union to apply for the bus and taxi fare decrease after the huge decrease in prices of fuel.
LTA CEO Etuate Koroi said LTA will act if the two industries do not apply for the fare decrease.
Meanwhile, the Consumer Council chief executive Premila Kumar said the LTA should not be asking the Bus Operators and the Taxi Union to apply for a decrease in fares, rather they should decrease it.
The price of diesel will now cost $1.70.
The price of motor spirit or unleaded fuel will now cost $1.98 a litre while the price of kerosene will cost $1.46 cents, the price of premix outboard fuel will be $1.90 cents.
Meanwhile, the Prices and Incomes Board is yet to decide whether there will be further reductions of fuel prices next month.
PIB's senior pricing officer Lucy Naimawi said they still haven't done their calculations for next month’s review as they are yet to get the new prices.
She added people can make their own judgment by looking at prices of crude oil to know whether there will be further decreases in prices of fuel.
