Springbok flanker Schalk Burger has been discharged from hospital and sent home to recuperate after being diagnosed with bacterial meningitis.

Burger contracted the disease while in hospital following an operation to reduce pressure on a nerve in his calf.

The Stormers talisman was diagnosed with the potentially serious infection on March 27th, but remained stable throughout his stay in hospital.

Burger has not played for the Stormers since injuring his knee over a year ago and was due to return to Super Rugby this season but hurt his calf ahead of the start of the campaign.

The Stormers will host the Sharks at 3:03am Sunday.

Meanwhile, tonight the Highlanders face the Brumbies at 7:35pm.
