A building situated at Draiba Primary School which was destroyed by the rebels who took part in the 2000 coup, has now been rebuilt.

Speaking at the opening of the new four classroom block this morning, Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama said the rebels ripped apart the walls of the school building to use it as firewood. 

Commodore Bainimarama who was the Army Commander at the time eventually intervened in late May 2000 declared martial law and ended the hostage crisis.

As he highlighted what happened 14 years ago in Fiji, he also reminded people that some people who supported the 2000 coup are still trying to get back into power.  

Commodore Bainimarama stressed that education is the best way to improve the position of ordinary Fijians in the country. 

 
The Prime Minister who is a former student of Draiba Primary encouraged all the students to work hard and assist in building the nation.


The new building cost $140,000. 

It has been funded by the Prime Minister's Office.

The school was established in 1947. 

More than 300 students are currently attending the school.
