Bua Villagers, farmers plea for help
That was the plea from the people of the Province of Bua as they met with the Prime Minister last week.
Tui Wainunu Ratu Orisi Baleitavea said the elderly are usually left to struggle on their own once youths leave for urban areas.
Meanwhile, Penijamini Matakasi from the Naroi Rice Farming Village also of Bua said farmers feel cheated as their rice is often sold at a lower price than promised by middle men, and they find this out after taking their rice all the way to the Dreketi mill, which is a very costly exercise.
Matakasi who represented the small rice farming community in Bua said that the farmers spend close two hundred dollars for cartage and upon reaching the mill, they find their sweat is all in vain.
The plea has seen Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama ordering that a review be done on the price ranges for raw rice so that the farmers get paid their dues.
