Brumbies captain Stephen Moore said the shock retirement of Ita Vaea this week helped provide inspiration for the Brumbies to claim their first win at Allianz Stadium in 14 years.
The Brumbies beat the Waratahs 26-20 last night in their Super Rugby match.
Vaea left his teammates stunned, and more than a couple in tears, on Monday when the big No.8 informed the Brumbies squad he would have to hang up his boots immediately due to an ongoing health problem.
Vaea suffers from blood clots in his legs and was advised he risks a heart attack or stroke if he keeps playing.
Several Brumbies paid tribute to Vaea after their win over the Waratahs, including three-try hero Joe Tomane, who had his nickname “Dox” written on wrist strapping.
Moore said the team had spoken pregame about how Vaea’s misfortune showed how fleeting a rugby career can be, and to make the most of every match.
Meanwhile, in other Super Rugby matches, the Lions beat the Stormers 29-22, the Bulls beat the Reds 41-22 while the Blues defeated the Sharks 23-18.
