Representatives of the group known as the United Front for a Democratic Fiji has proposed for the reinstatement of the Yash Ghai Commission’s draft constitution.

The group which includes Ratu Jone Kubuabola, Sakiusa Raivoce, Dr. Tupeni Baba, Lavenia Padarath, Mahendra Chaudhry, Mick Beddoes and Attar Singh met with the Commonwealth fact-finding Mission team on Monday.

The two member Commonwealth Secretariat group is in Fiji for a week to obtain views on current political affairs and developments ahead of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group meeting later this month.

The United Front has made proposals that the Ghai Commission draft constitution should be referred to a fully representative Constituent Assembly which is to be appointed by the President following consultations with political parties and key stakeholders.

They have also proposed that the Ghai draft constitution should then be put to a national referendum for the approval of the people of Fiji which will give it legal authority and legitimacy.

They also propose that the Political Parties Decree should be rescinded.

In a written statement, the group has also proposed that a caretaker administration should be appointed as provided for in the Ghai Conmmission draft however this to be done from the effective date of the new constitution.
 
They have also proposed that the international community must toughen its stance against Fiji if the government does not comply.

Meanwhile, the group is expected to meet with the Pacific Islands Forum Ministerial Contact Group this afternoon.
