These are the sentiments of Consumer Council of Fiji chief executive Premila Kumar as she said the council has already found some traders of infant food in Fiji violating the International Code of Marketing of Breast Milk substitute.
Kumar also said the council has welcomed Cabinet's approval of the Marketing Controls (Foods for Infants and Young) Regulations 2010 adding they have found some traders giving free gifts with the purchase of a tin of formula milk.
Kumar said the council is closely working with the International Baby Food Action Network trying to publish leaflets highlighting all the breaches in Fiji.
She said the council is encouraged by the Market Controls Regulations 2010 as the violators can be penalized.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Dr Neil Sharma said that the regulations will render illegal activities which promote commercial baby foods and related products, remove unfair competition and pave the way forward for the promotion of breastfeeding.
He said the regulations will not prohibit the availability of designated products when it will be necessary.
