Break silence on cancer - Namibar
That is the message being stressed by the Fiji Cancer Society to try to break the silence on cancer.
According to the Society, in 2009 alone the Ministry of Health reported 60 new cases of breast cancer, 90 for cervical cancer and 35 new cases of cancer in men with the total reported cases standing at 372.
Society President, Nirmala Namibar said that keeping quiet or having the view that cancer means death is wrong as early detection can mean a 90% survival rate.
She added that many people nowadays tend to come at the later stages of cancer which greatly reduces the survival rate by 10% - 20%.
She added that one needs to come forward if they love their children as many children are left without a parent and many in many cases without a mother as cancer signs are not taken seriously.
As part of Cancer Awareness month, the Society is having a bra art competition as well as other fundraising activities planned.
