A survey of the boundaries of Native leases occupied by Government Institutions will now be carried out after Cabinet approval this afternoon.

Interim Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Netani Sukanaivalu said that there are currently 458 native leases to State with a total annual rent of $2,298,500.

He said that 327 of these leases to State have not been surveyed. Sukanaivalu said that one of the conditions of the lease is that the lessee which in this case is the Director of Lands should make necessary arrangements to survey the subject leased area within 3 months from the date of signing the Agreement to lease by the NLTB and him.

According to Sukanaivalu, the State as a Tenant demands security of tenure to protect government's interest on subject land. He said that the survey will start next year and will take ten years to complete.

Meanwhile, Sukanaivalu also said that the survey of the total boundary perimeter of mahogany plantations in Fiji will take place next year.

Cabinet has approved the survey of 14 mahogany leases and all the plantations are on native land.
