Bole Declares USP Strike Unlawful
However, USP Staff Union General Secretary Litiana Waqalevu said they have now engaged their lawyers to verify the authenticity of the Order.
In a statement Bole said that that the Registrar of Trade Unions advised him that he had not declared the results of a properly conducted secret ballot undertaken by the Union on September 9th and that the Employer reported a trade dispute to the Ministry which is now under consideration, hence declaring the strike unlawful.
Meanwhile, on their grievances and whether it will be looked into by management, Waqalevu said the management has referred the matter to the Labour Ministry however there is no mechanism in place to address the issues. Their grievances include the dissolving of the media centre and union members not being told of their future and the non-advertisement of vacancies at the University.
The USP management had earlier said that it was concerning and puzzling that the Union should claim the University is in breach of the collective agreement between the Union and management with regards to the redundancy of both Intermediate and Junior staff employed at the Media Centre.
