The government forked out a total of $1.5 billion from 2000 to 2008 towards poverty alleviation but there has not been much change.

These are the sentiments of John Sawani the Principal Assistant Secretary for the Poverty Eradication Unit based at the Prime Minister's Office.

Speaking at the introductory workshop on Poverty Impact Assessment earlier today, where all Government Department Heads were present, Sawani stressed that this is all tax payers money and the figure did not include donor agency funding.

Sawani said as a result, a more accountable system needs to be put in place and this is the reason why the government has sought the assistance of the International Initiative for Impact Evaluation Organisation.
