Better pay packet expected for miners
People who have to put their lives on the line daily can expect better pay for the hazardous work they do, as the Wages Council has completed its proposed wage increases for the Mining and Quarry Industry.
Council Chairman Fr Kevin Barr confirmed that the final wages order has been completed and should come into effect in September or October.
Father Barr said they have considered the worker's hazardous conditions when reaching a decision.
The New Wage Order for the other nine industries came into effect on July 1st however a few hotel operators have not implemented it as yet claiming that they are await listings from the Labour Ministry to table at their board meetings.
Fijivillage has contacted a number of hotels and resorts around the country on the increase in the wages order who say they are yet to implement the orders as they need the listing before the new wages can be passed on to their workers.
However, Father Barr said that this is very strange as employers were given more than adequate time to prepare for the implementation of the new wage regulations.
