Benji Marshall is set to turn his back on rugby union, and make a return to rugby league.

The Blues and New Zealand Rugby Union have received a request from Marshall to be released early from his contract.

The Blues released a statement last night, saying all parties are currently in discussions regarding this request and need to work through a formal process before making any further comment.

Marshall, who received just 212 minutes of game time in eight Super Rugby matches for the Blues, insists frustration at the lack of opportunity was not the reason for his decision to seek a release.

Cronulla, St George Illawarra, Parramatta, South Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane are all likely to be interested in a star play-maker of Marshall's calibre and experience.

The Blues will take on the Waratahs at 5.35pm this Friday while at 7.40pm the Brumbies meet the Chiefs.
