27-year-old inmate Iowane Benedito is being denied visitations by the Fiji Corrections Service as a result of him escaping from the Suva Corrections Centre on the 18th of November, 2012.

This confirms a statement released today by the Fiji Corrections Centre.

The statement added that Benedito is also being segregated while kept at the Naboro Maximum Corrections Center.

Fiji Corrections Service clarifies that the reason for Benedito’s segregation is due to him being given the opportunity to give himself up, after the others were apprehended but did not take advantage of that offer.

Fiji Corrections Service reiterates all inmates who breach the rules will face the consequences of their actions, particularly the loss of privileges including visitations.

The statement highlights that is unfortunate that his mother should complain about his visitation now, as she should have been part of the effort to have Benedito give himself up when his accomplices were apprehended.

Meanwhile, the family of inmate Iowane Benedito has confirmed lodging an official police complaint on Thursday against the members of the arresting team who allegedly assaulted Benedito during his arrest, and will also be seeking legal advice.

Benedito is now serving a sentence of 12 months after being convicted in January 2013 for escaping from lawful custody, damaging property and resisting arrest.
