The beginning of the school year for all schools in Fiji has been deferred to 26th January, 2009 due to the unfavorable weather conditions.

The Ministry of Education has stated in the last few minutes that the safety of all students and teachers is a priority and for this reason, the ministry wishes to request all boats that are to transport teachers and students to respective stations, not to depart, until the weather office gives the all clear.

Furthermore, the Education Ministry said at the start of school now on the 26th of January, the rules of school uniforms should be relaxed and students who do not have uniforms must be allowed to attend school in mufti provided it is respectable and neat.

The Divisional Education Officers are requested to consult with the Deputy Secretary Primary and Secondary, Jimione Buwawa, on all matters relating to the flood.

School heads are further reminded to provide a detailed report of damages caused by the flood waters.
