The public should now be vigilant when they get in taxis.
That is the word from Land Transport Authority spokesperson Eroni Volavola who said with the taxi owners pushing for increases in fares, drivers and owners have to ensure that their meters have been calibrated and in use, starting from today.
Volavola said the use of meters is mandated under the law and if they get in taxis and meters are not switched on, they should take the registration number down and call LTA.
However, Volavola said the only place where taxi meters will not be used, apart from meter free zones like Nabouwalu and Taveuni, is when the driver and the passenger agree on a set fare.
