Be prepared in advance-Red Cross
That is the call from the Fiji Red Cross Society Disaster Programs Director, Vuli Gauna.
Addressing heads of Government Departments as well officials from the National Disaster Centre last week, Gauna said that in any disaster, warnings are issued from the authorities and yet people still do not heed any advice.
Gauna added in this case, there needs to be a review of what people are supposed to take with them to evacuation centres.
Red Cross stressed that every person that is about to be moved to an evacuation centre needs to take food that can last a few days, batteries and a portable radio as well as warm clothes and blankets.
Statistics from the National Disaster Management office, showed that there were more than 13,000 evacuees in 1,804 evacuation centres around the country during Hurricane Tomas and in some cases as close to 1,000 people were sheltering in one school.
