People are advised to prepare for strong winds and continuous heavy rain from today into tomorrow and Saturday.

A strong wind warning is in place for all land areas of Fiji and all waters in Fiji.

Please take this into consideration as the Tropical Disturbance which was located 590 kilometres North North West of Nadi earlier this morning was upgraded to a Tropical Depression overnight.

That is the centre of the system and you will feel strong winds and experience heavy rain from later today into tomorrow and Saturday.

At this time the best estimate is that the centre of the system will lie just West of Nadi late tomorrow night or early Saturday morning.

Winds and heavy rain will pick up hours before the system passes Fiji.

There is a high chance of the depression becoming a Category 1 or 2 Tropical Cyclone by tomorrow.

Please take all the necessary precautions today as strong winds will pick up in all land areas from late today going into tomorrow and Saturday.

The major concern over this period is heavy rain and strong winds associated with the system. It is anticipated that the system will become slow moving as it comes close to Fiji.

Seas will become very rough and visibility will be poor in areas of heavy rain and thunderstorms.

The major concern from today is localised heavy and flash flooding, with increased chances of flooding of major tributaries and rivers in the western and northern divisions.

It is advisable that all communities remain prepared at all times and take necessary precautions well ahead of the start of heavy rain and strong winds.

Please do not leave things to the last minute.
