Battle looms in 100m Senior Boys Final
The 100m record set way back in 1993 by Viliame Nasuku of QVS, in a time of 10.74 seconds, is the oldest record at the Coke Games for the boys, and has stood in the way for top athletes like Iowane Dovumatua, Jone Biutilodoni and Tilesh Naidu, in the past years.
With only a day left for the biggest athletics event in the South Pacific, this year's showdown is expected to be close.
Leading the charge is QVS, Jocame Waqavonovono and Sila Central's Tevita Nalovo, who both ran in the time of 10.7 seconds in their respective Zones.
Nalovo is confident he will set a new record in the blue ribbon on Friday.
Meanwhile, defending Boys champions Suva Grammar will rely on Mataiasi Savou and Sireli Degei.
Savou, who has been winning gold from the Junior and Intermediate grades, clocked a time of 10.87 seconds in the Suva Zone 2.
He comes into the Coke Games with the second fastest time and it is also the first time for him to compete in the Senior grade.
Under the guidance of SPG Sprint King Jone Delai, Savou has not promised much, but is ready to deliver for the Lions.
Degei who has been coming in second to Iowane Dovumatua, will want to end his secondary school career on a high note, in winning the gold medal, that has evaded him for the past 2 years.
Natabua High School's Alfred Smith is the best bet from the West after clocking a time of 11 seconds at Churchill Park.
Smith won bronze in the 100m final last year.
The 2009 Coca-Cola Games will start at 8am on Friday at the TFL Stadium.
