Pacific sprint king Banuve Tabakaucoro will be leaving the country today to take part in the Australian Championship without much financial assistance.
Joseph Rodan Junior, the Vice President of the Athletics Fiji group led by Albert Miller, said they have decided to send Tabakaucoro hoping he can meet the qualifying time for the Commonwealth Games.
Rodan said it’s unfortunate to send Tabakaucoro without his coach Bola Tafou due to financial constraints.
Yesterday Tabakaucoro’s father Ratu Jo Tabakaucoro received some of the money from Miller’s Athletics Fiji group for Banuve’s trip.
The Australian Championship will start tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the President of the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee Reg Sanday confirmed they are currently awaiting the minutes and a full report of the Athletics Fiji’s Annual General Meeting which was held last Saturday in Nadi.
As of now, Dr Robin Mitchell who is the Mediator of Athletics Fiji and who called the meeting last Saturday to resolve the differences between two athletics Fiji groups, has told the officials that all funding to Athletics Fiji is frozen.
The Fiji National Sports Commission will not be providing funding for development or tours.
