The ban imposed by the Suva City Council on the sale of all prepared or processed and cooked food from the Suva Muncipal market will now remain in place indefinitely from March 1st,2010.
SCC Director Health Services Nacanieli Kotoiwasawasa confirmed that in light of the recent food poisoning cases the ban will now remain in place indefinitely until further notice.
The ban is imposed on prepared raw food such as Fish, Kaikoso, Vasu or Giant clams, Cawaki, Nama or sea weed, raw mana or mud lobsters, and cooked and prepared sea food such as Mana with miti, prawn, Lumi, Kaikoso, octupus, Vivili and Sici or shellfish, dairo and fish.
The ban is also imposed on food baked in lovo as tavioka, dalo, falawa, tivoli, cooked corn and ivi.
After imposing the ban earlier this month, the SCC over the past few weeks held consultations with the market vendors following the death of a woman from food poisoning and has now decided that the ban is to remain in place indefinitely.
