Some senior Health Ministry officials are now pushing for the banning of the sale of cigarettes rolls.

Fijivillage has established that discussions have been ongoing. A few meetings have already been held and serious consideration is being made to impose a ban on the sale of individual rolls.

Some of the main reasons for proposing this action is based on the fact that the individual cigarette rolls do not carry any health warnings on the harmful effects of smoking and the young people are able to afford a roll, as it is about 40 cents each.

An analysis of the current Tobacco Control Act is being carried out and some major changes are expected in the near future. Under the Act, cigarettes sold to people should have clear and visible warnings on the harmful effects of smoking.

Meanwhile the Tobacco Control Unit continues to charge minors caught smoking cigarettes. Stay with us for more on this issue later today.
