Interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama has questioned the Prime Minister of New Zealand why she is pushing for Fiji not to make changes to the constitution when NZ does not have a constitution.
Speaking to Village News, Commodore Bainimarama has made it clear that he has no intention to abrogate the 1997 constitution.
The laws of New Zealand consists of a collection of acts of parliament, treaties, Order-in-Council, decisions of the courts and unwritten constitutional conventions.
There is no one supreme document and the NZ constitution is not codified or entrenched. New Zealand's constitution is similar to that of the UK and Israel.
Meanwhile, New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark has stressed that Fiji should have the next general elections under the current constitution and there should be no changes at all.
While speaking to Village News in Tonga, Clark said nothing else will be acceptable and Fiji should go to the polls by March 2009.
Clark also said donors like the Commonwealth and NZ stand ready to assist Fiji after seeing a comprehensive plan for the road to democracy in Fiji.
However, Clark said there will be no one on one meetings with Fiji's Interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama for now.
The Forum Foreign Ministers are expected to meet in January next year to analyse Fiji's detailed plan for the March 2009 elections.
