The interim government has today clarified that Interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama did not directly appoint himself as the chairman of the Great Council of Chiefs.
In a press conference this afternoon, Acting Prime Minister Ratu Epeli Nailatikau revealed that Commodore Bainimarama was appointed by Cabinet after looking at certain issues.
Ratu Epeli said the interim cabinet decided to move away from certain recommendations of the GCC taskforce as they strongly feel that the minister responsible must remain a member and chairman of the GCC.
Nailatikau has also confirmed that changes in relation to the Great Council of Chiefs will be taken to the grassroots people through the provincial councils.
He added that the interim cabinet had extensive consultations on the new changes through the GCC special task force report to make the necessary changes.
Nailatikau said that the interim government is very appreciative of the work of the task force and is looking forward to working closely with it in implementing the new regulations.
