Fiji's interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama has called on the new US President Barack Obama to be more understanding and assist Fiji in achieving true parliamentary democracy.

In his congratulatory message to President-elect Obama, Bainimarama had described Obama's election as a wonderful expression by the United States of America of their confidence in his leadership and agenda for change.

Commodore Bainimarama wrote to Obama that Fiji is also pursuing change in a whole range of areas pertaining to the governance of our country for the achievement of genuine and true democracy and lasting peace and prosperity for our people. Bainimarama said he trusts that Obama's administration will render Fiji a more understanding and conciliatory approach in helping move Fiji forward.

Commodore Bainimarama told Barack Obama that he is looking forward to working closely with him and his government in the strengthening of our two countries' bilateral relations and of their collective support for regional cooperation.
