With the threat of thousands of Sigatoka residents left without water supply due to pump failure, the Water Supply Department in the West is now looking at back-up systems and pumps for Nadi and Sigatoka.

Divisional Water Supply Officer Western Peceli Ravausa said their system in Sigatoka is very fragile as any electrical or pump failure sees them rushing engineers down all the way from Lautoka.

Ravausa said the Sigatoka water works system deals with huge specialist pumps and blowers which pump water from the rivers to the treatment plant in Matovo.

A specialist is needed to man the plant all the time.

Ravausa said at times people are left without water supply for up to a week and they have to cart water in trucks which costs them a lot of money.

Over the weekend, a huge power blackout in Sigatoka saw over 6 thousand residents of the town left without water supply however the problem was fixed on Sunday.
