Police in the Northern Division have attributed the high number of sexual offences reporting, to a major awareness campaign.

Figures provided by police yesterday revealed a total of 96 sexual offences related cases were reported in the Northern Division last year.

Regional Police Commander Northern, SSP Luke Qionibaravi said their officers usually visit communities and meet people to explain to them the importance of reporting the matter to police if they have been victims of sexual offences or what they can do if they do fall victim to these, in future.

Cases reported in the Northern Division last year included Defilement of girls under the age of 16, Rape, Incest, Un-natural offences and Indecent Assault.

Qionibaravi said through their campaign some of the sexual crimes committed in 2006, 2007 and 2008 were also reported.

He adds that in most of the cases the victims were related to the offenders.
