The Sugar Cane Growers Council has called on farmers to refrain from burning cane and to harvest cane for the quota allocated to reduce the deterioration of cane quality.
This follows the fire incident at the Ba Sugar mill boiler on Tuesday morning.
SCGC Chief Executive Officer, Sundresh Chetty said upon a request from the council, FSC has agreed to transfer cane to Lautoka and Penang mills and that the corporation has also agreed to pay an additional cost not exceeding $10 per tonne for transfer of lorry cane until the mill is in operation.
Chetty said the request was made in order to keep the harvesting in operation and also to accommodate the growers who would have been without work for another three weeks.
Meanwhile, FSC confirmed that fire incident has caused substantial damages and the rehabilitation work is expected to take at least two weeks.
FSC also confirmed they will assist the cane growers in Ba for the additional cost of delivering their sugarcane to Lautoka and Penang mills.
FSC Chief Executive Officer, Deo Saran said this arrangement is now in place until Rarawai mill is brought back into operation
Investigations are still underway.
