Australia overcame a strong challenge from Ghana for them to have a 1-all draw, and their hopes for a finish in the top 16 remains alive at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The Socceroos hammered 4-0 by Germany in their opening Group D game, took an early lead through Brett Holman.

Australia was awarded a free kick which saw Mark Bresciano's effort spilt by Ghana and Holman was ready to slot in the rebound in the 10th minute of play.

And less than 13 minutes later former Liverpool forward Harry Kewell was shown a straight red card for a handball on the goal line and this gave Ghana the opportunity to slot in a goal.

Australia came close to winning the match when Luke Wilkshire made a run for it but failed to beat Black Stars goalkeeper Richard Kingston.

It was an impressive display from the Australians especially since they suffered a hammer blow of having a key man sent off for the second game in a row.

The Socceroos could still reach the last 16 in South Africa if they defeat Serbia in their final game next week, while Ghana need only a point against the Germans to advance

Former England midfielder, Steven McManaman blasted the national side for their poor performance at the 20010 FIFA Wolrd Cup.

This follows England's 0 0 draw against Group C rivals Algeria on Friday.
