Australia will be prepared to help Fiji's Interim government hold election in 2009 if the polls are credible.

The Foreign Minister Alexander Downer has been quoted as saying in Canberra by AU News that the elections in Fiji will have to be credible.

He said an independent electoral commission will have to supervise Fiji's elections and Australia will be prepared to provide assistance to make sure election happens on time.

However Downer said the progress on the election process is ever so slow.

The Interim government had earlier announced that elections will be called in March 2009.
