Australian captain Liz Ellis said the game was really tough and respects the Silver Ferns for their performance game.
New Zealand still has a title to win at home and has never won back-to-back championships.
Jamaica beat England by 53-52 in the playoff for third, Malawi beat South Africa 52-49 to finish fifth and Cook Islands pipped Samoa 56-55 for seventh position.
