More than FJD$4M has been offered to Fiji by the Australian government for the country’s return to democracy.

Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Senator Bob Carr announced that Australia has offered AUD$2.65M to help Fiji deliver on its commitment to hold free and fair elections and transition to democracy in 2014.

Senator Carr said Australia’s assistance will support Fiji’s Elections Office, the recently established Constitutional Commission and civic awareness programs.

Carr added Australia will work with the Fiji Elections Office, local and international partners and the United Nations in delivering this package.

Voter registration will begin in July as well as public consultations on the new constitution.
