Fiji Islands Council of Trade Unions said there are major reasons as to why their Union has backed the Interim Government's stand to defer the implementation of the Employment Relations bill.
General Secretary, Attar Singh said the major worry for them is that the bill contains restrictions for Unions to strike.

However, Fiji Employers Federation's President Dixon Seeto said Singh is wrong in saying that Unions will be restricted to strike, but there are only procedural changes when unions want to strike.
Meanwhile, Cabinet has approved that the commencement of the various parts of the Employment Relations bill will be staggered.
According to a Cabinet release, this will allow the employers, workers and Government to better prepare for the full implementation of the Promulgation.
Acting Interim Labour Minister, Adi Laufitu Malani said the interim government will allow a grace period after the enactment of the bill on 1st October 2007. She adds extensive consultation should take place before the bill is enacted as a law.
