The Fiji Athletics team returned from the Oceania Athletics Championship with 10 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze medals.

The highlight was in the Men’s 100 metres final, where Niko Verekauta beat the likes of Banuve Tabakaucoro, Iowane Dovumatua and Tevita Nalovo.

Verekauta finished in a time of 10.60 seconds while Dovumatua was placed third, Tabakaucoro in 5th place and Nalovo finishing last in 8th place.

Top sprinter Makelesi Bulikiobo was beaten in the Women’s 100 metres final by Papua New Guinea's Toea Wisil.

The athletes that won gold medals included Leslie Copeland, Makelesi Bulikiobo in the 200 metres final, Soko Salaniqiqi, Kavita Maharaj, Sereima Liku and Varasiko Toge Tomeru.

Coach Albert Miller said the competition was really tough, as Fiji athletes were competing against some of the top athletes in the Oceania region.

He said more time is needed for our athletes to really prepare for the next month's Mini Pacific Games.
