Rewa Dairy Cooperative Company Chairman Josefa Serulagilagi said the government should assist the Dairy Industry just like the Sugar and Tourism Industries.
Serulagilagi said over the past years, the government has always neglected the dairy industry and that's the main reason for the increase in the import of the raw materials from New Zealand and Australia.
He said the fact remains that the Fiji dairy industry is only producing 11 million liters of milk per annum while 48 million liters is being imported.
He said dairy farmers are fortunate this year that for the first time, government has set aside $750,000.
The prices of butter and other dairy products are expected to increase soon.
General Manager of Dairy Farms Fiji Limited in Navua and a member of the Rewa Dairy Cooperative Board David Wilson confirmed to Fijivillage News that submissions have been made for an increase in butter prices in light of a 66 percent increase in the prices for the raw materials.
