Three inmates who allegedly raped a 28-year-old inmate at the Suva Corrections Centre in 2012 have been found guilty by the three assessors in the trial.

The assessors made the decision after the summing up of the case by High Court Judge Justice Achala Wengappuli.

Justice Wengappuli told the assessors to determine whether the prosecution has proven beyond reasonable doubt that a sasa broom was used in the act of rape by the three accused persons and whether all three accused and the complainant were present at Suva Corrections Centre on the day of the alleged incident.

It took the assessors 30 minutes to come back with their decision.

The 28-year-old inmate was allegedly raped by inmates Jonacani Ciritabua, Tevita Qaqanivalu and Sefton Tupou at Suva Corrections Centre on the 2nd of November, 2012.

Qaqanivalu is currently serving time in prison while Ciritabua and Tupou have served their time for another offence and are currently in custody for this case.

Justice Wengappuli will deliver his verdict next Tuesday.
